Ethiopia distributes foodto millions facing hunger

Image
HOME Ethiopia's government has started distributing rations of wheat and oil to people facing hunger in the north and northeastern parts of the country. Secretary of the Ethiopian Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Committee, Mitiku Kassa says they are now supplying 15kg of wheat and a half litre of cooking oil per adult in the areas hit by drought conditions. More than 8 million people require urgent food assistance, and the Ethiopian government says there is enough food aid to feed them through December. The government recently appealed to the international community for 596 million US dollars (£392 million) in food assistance. The UN says the scale of the developing emergency exceeds resources available so far. The food insecurity is fuelled by the failure of Ethiopia's spring rains that resulted in poor crop yields.

The reminder from the wife of the President came after Senators from the ruling party voted against a motion moved by the opposition, calling on the Presidency to pay the 5,000 Naira allowance, as promised. Mrs Buhari said that the APC was a party of integrity and had assured Nigerians during the campaign that it would pay 5,000 Naira each month to 25 million most vulnerable citizens. Mrs Buhari, however, asked Nigerians to be patient with the APC government, as the change they had been yearning for, had come to stay. On November 6 the APC assured Nigerians that it would ...
